Bathrooms with running water are available.

Trek through moorland then alpine desert to “The Saddle” between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. From here you will walk for about an hour and thirty minutes to reach Kibo hut. Here we prepare for the midnight ascent to Uhuru peak.

Day 5: Kibo Huts - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Huts

Elevation (metres): 4703m to 5895m to 3720m
Distance and Hiking Time:

  • Kibo Huts - Uhuru Peak (6 kms, 6-8 hrs)
  • Decent to Horombo Huts (16 kms, 5-6 hrs)

Around midnight, awake for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The hike begins with a demanding hike to Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. This early start makes it easier to climb the snow scree slope to Gillman’s Point when it is still frozen and also improves the chances of reaching the summit in time for sunrise.

The hike from Gillman’s Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude however makes the hike long and tiring. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, spend a few minutes on the summit taking photos before beginning the descent. Stop for a short break and snacks at Kibo Hut before proceeding with the descent to Horombo Huts, reaching in the afternoon.

Day 6: Horombo Huts - Marangu Gate

Elevation (metres): 3720m to 1970m - Distance: 20kms - Hiking Time: 5-7 hrs
After breakfast, finish the trek with a descent to Marangu Gate. Each hiker will receive a well-earned certificate of achievement for the successful climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro; climbers who reached Gillman's Point (5681m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates. You now drive back to Moshi for a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations!
